An ASP file is a web page created by a web developer on a web server. This file can contain scripts that are written in VBScript and JavaScript. Such a file is parsed on the server-generated HTML and sent to the client browser. ASP files are often used by ASP.NET sites with websites that are hosted on Microsoft IIS Windows servers.

ASP files resemble .HTML files, but they are used differently. The server starts sending the file when a web browser wants to receive an HTML file. However, if the web browser requests an ASP file, the server begins sending the request to the ASP engine, which is parsed by the ASP file and generates plain HTML sent to the client browser.

Since ASP pages are processed on the server, the website visitor does not see the ASP code; only the HTML generated from the scripts inside the page is available for viewing. Often ASP pages use the ".asp" extension, but not the ".html" extension.
