A TAR file is considered an archive created by tar (a Unix utility) to pack files for backup and distribution. It contains files saved in an uncompressed format with metadata on the archive. TAR files are often compressed into .GZ files using GNU Zip compression.

The TAR format and tar utility debuted back in 1979 for writing data to tape drives (storage devices) that read and write data to magnetic tape.
Modern computers use the TAR format on Unix and Linux systems to merge multiple files into one. TAR archives are valuable for backing up and transferring multiple files to other locations.
Users can compress TAR files to reduce their size. TAR archives that have been compressed thanks to GNU Zip are converted to GZ, .TAR.GZ, or .TGZ files.
